Steve Pickering


Stephen Pickering was born in Castine, Maine and spent his formative years in Stonington and Deer Isle, Maine. His mother, a school teacher and his father, a lobster fisherman were also born and raised on the island. His family has lived in the this beautiful part of coastal Maine for several generations.

He graduated from Deer Isle-Stonington High School in 1974 and enlisted in the United States Navy a month later. The majority of his Navy service was spent aboard the USS Fulton AS-11, a Submarine Tender that was stationed in New London, CT. Within two months of his discharge from the Navy he applied for and was accepted as a Trooper with the Maine State Police. Upon completion of his training in the 35th Training Troop he moved to East Millinocket, Maine and patrolled the northern end of Interstate 95 as as member of Troop I.

His twenty-eight year career found him living in Cherryfield and patrolling in Washington and
Hancock counties as a member of Troop J. He was promoted to detective in 1986 and assigned to the joint DEA-Maine State Police Anti-Smuggling Task Force. His detective career took him to the Criminal Investigation Division III and he was the first Troop Detective for Troop J. Stephen was promoted to Sergeant in 2002 and served as the supervisor of the Bangor office of CID III.He retired in 2006 and began his second career as a private investigator. Stephen continues to work in that capacity.

He resides in Blue Hill, Maine with his wife, Betty. Stephen and Betty have three sons each from previous marriages, twelve grandchildren and a great grandchild.

Founded in 1975, the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization that works to enrich the literary life and culture of Maine. They are the only statewide organization solely devoted to supporting and promoting Maine’s writers, publishers, booksellers, and literary professionals. The MWPA has a membership of well over 1,000.

Their goals include: promoting an appreciation of Maine literature; creating a network of writers, readers, and publishers; creating opportunities for writers to improve writing and marketing skills; and informing members and the public of Maine literary and publishing news.  VISIT MWPA website.
